URGENT APPEAL

A message from CEO of WeSeeHope UK, Mark Glen

Updated July 2020

On behalf of the team at WeSeeHope, I hope you and your family are safe and well as we continue to face this difficult and uncertain situation together.

As is sadly the case for many charities, it has been a challenging few months for us as we respond to the impact of COVID-19 on the communities and children we are working with, and on our operations in the UK.

IMPACT ON CHILDREN & COMMUNITIES

For 20 years, we have existed to create genuine and sustainable change for vulnerable children in Southern and Eastern Africa through community-led education, child rights and economic empowerment programmes. These are delivered by our network of committed in-country partners in areas where they are most needed.

We are hugely concerned about the impact of COVID-19 in the poor and isolated communities we are working with. As this crisis unfolds, low-income households are being adversely affected socially and economically, and the repercussions for vulnerable children will likely be long-term.

To help prevent, deal with and recover from this, they desperately need support. And that’s why, we need you – if you feel able to be alongside us at this critical moment.

IMPACT ON OUR FUNDING

Since March, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a drastic effect on our immediate funding and to our longer term income predictions. We therefore worked quickly and hard to cut back on costs to stabilize us both in the short and long term, resulting in reductions for our staff and changes to our structure.

To respond, we also launched this urgent appeal for support and have been overwhelmed by people’s generosity and kindness in helping us to recover some of the income we lost, and to steady us for the coming months.

We cannot thank you enough. But we must not stop there as the outlook remains uncertain and difficult to predict.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

JULY UPDATE: WORKING ALONGSIDE OUR PARTNERS DURING COVID-19

On 8th July, the World Health Organization reported that confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Africa had surpassed 500,000 and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reiterated; “The pandemic is gaining full momentum.” The number of cases in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe is still unclear primarily due to a lack of testing but in Kenya there has been a sharp rise.

Together with our partners, our focus is on improving awareness about COVID-19 in the poor and isolated communities we are working with, whilst also reducing negative social and economic impacts through key program activities.
